Last week an event did not turn out the way I hoped and expected. Don't sweat the small stuff I told myself. And yea, it wasn't a big deal really. But to me, small things matter so much. I can't explain why.
And this particular incident, although seemingly insignificant made me sad. I was disappointed and frustrated. I tried to push it aside instead of allowing myself to turn into the drama queen that I am (hey, I didn't ask to be this way). So I told myself, "Hema let it be...." .
I missed all my good old days with Pu Ei, Nanthu, Guna, Superman, Hitler, Uncle and Sharin. We used to have so much fun. I remember few incidents which will stay forever in my memory. Pu Ei took the wrong lane to send me home and we both parked the car at LRT station because we can't drive back home, Guna once puke right infront of my condo and Superman who supposed to rescue me within 5 second only came after half and hour. It makes me feel so good to think about all the fun I used to have. We never laugh or label people for their drinking habits and the most important thing is the gal and the guys are treated as equal. We simply don't speak about the past and we only think about how to have more fun in the future.
Moral of the story is don't drink because you have the bottle infront of you rather choose who you want to drink with because you want to have fun and carry out the good memory forever. Any Tom, Dick and Harry can be the typical person who will not be able to
substain the level of fun.

Revered in India as the "Father of the Nation," Mohandas K. Gandhi is also a worldwide icon of non-violent political resistance. Gandhi was born in India and studied law in England, then spent 20 years defending the rights of immigrants in South Africa. He returned to India in 1914, eventually becoming the leader of the Indian National Congress. At the time, India was part of the British Empire, and Gandhi urged non-violence and civil disobedience as a means to independence. His public acts of defiance landed him in jail many times as the struggle continued through World War II. In 1947 he participated in the postwar negotiations with Britain that led to Indian independence. He was shot to death by a Hindu fanatic the next year. An advocate of simple living, Gandhi ate a vegetarian diet and made his own clothes; the spinning wheel became a symbol of his uncluttered lifestyle. His autobiography, The Story of My Experiments With Truth, was published in 1927. His birthday, October 2nd, is a national holiday in India.

Taj Mahal was built by a Muslim, Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his dear wife queen Mumtaz. It is an "elegy in marble" or some say an expression of a "dream." Taj Mahal (meaning Crown Palace) is a Mausoleum that houses the grave of Mumtaz at the lower chamber. The grave of Shah Jahan was added to it later. Taj Mahal was constructed over a period of twenty-two years, employing twenty thousand workers. It was completed in 1648 C.E. at a cost of 32 Million Rupees. The Taj stands on a raised, square platform (186 x 186 feet) with its four corners truncated, forming an unequal octagon. The architectural design uses the interlocking arabesque concept, in which each element stands on its own and perfectly integrates with the main structure. It uses the principles of self-replicating geometry and a symmetry of architectural elements.
Its central dome is fifty-eight feet in diameter and rises to a height of 213 feet. It is flanked by four subsidiary domed chambers. The four graceful, slender minarets are 162.5 feet each. The entire mausoleum (inside as well as outside) is decorated with inlaid design of flowers and calligraphy using precious gems such as agate and jasper. The main archways, chiseled with passages from the Holy Qur’an and the bold scroll work of flowery pattern, give a captivating charm to its beauty. The central domed chamber and four adjoining chambers include many walls and panels of Islamic decoration.
The mausoleum is a part of a vast complex comprising of a main gateway, an elaborate garden, a mosque (to the left), a guest house (to the right), and several other palatial buildings. The Taj is at the farthest end of this complex, with the river Jamuna behind it. The large garden contains four reflecting pools dividing it at the center. Each of these four sections is further subdivided into four sections and then each into yet another four sections. Like the Taj, the garden elements serve like Arabesque, standing on their own and also constituting the whole.

During the ancient and medieval times there were many in India who developed a fascination for astronomy and there are ample references to stars and planets in Indian myths and legends.

The man who gave a scientific base to these beliefs was Sawai Jai Singh-ll the Maharaja of Jaipur who built five grand observatories called Jantar Mantar (a corrupted version of Yantra Mantra---Yantra for instrument and Mantra for formula), located at Delhi, Jaipur, Varanasi, Ujjain and Mathura. All were built between 1724 and 1730 A.D. The observatories, in the words of historian V. Balaswaroop are, "monuments that irradiate a dark period of Indian history."

Breejesh, a young boy from Patna, Bihar. The one thing about him that I would like to remember is he makes a very good cup of coffee. Since the day I came to Bangalore, I never once failed to leave my serviced apartment without a cup of coffee. The sad part of this poor young man is he never knew when he was born, he assume that he is 18 now and ready for marriage.

I decided to celebrate his birthday and invited all his friend to come over to my place. He was very happy and it makes me feel really good to see the smile on his face. I realise then that it takes so little to make someone happy.

Onam celebrates the golden age of King Mahabali, the mythical ruler of Kerala. The festivities begin ten days in advance and floral decorations (Pookkalam) adorn every home. The graceful dance of Kaikottikali is performed around the Thrikakara Appan, which is finally immersed in a pond on the fourth day or Chadayam. Build by Tipu Sultan in 1781 - 1791 AD, It is situated in the busy market place close to the Fort built by Hyder Ali which has a well preserved Ganapathi Temple. This double storied ornate palace is made of teak wood & is beatifully decorated with floral motifs on the walls and the ceilings. The structure is replete with pillars, arches & balconies and the whole palace resembles Daira Daulat Palace of Srirangapatna. After the death of Tipu, British used this palace as their secretariat the fort are the remains of Tipu's Palace.

Behind the idol is the holy cave.The Cave Yatra is traditionally called the ' Amarnath Yatra'. Within the cave are twelve beautifully decorated Jyotir Lingas. There is the reverberation of "Om Namah Shivaya" mantra within the cave. The cave yatra is open to the public from 9 am to 9 pm. It attracts a large number of devotees, especially during festivals like Shivaratri, when four to five lakh devotees come here in a day. Puja services are offered free of charge for everyone.
There is a wishing pool. The priest of the temple says, "Devotees can get their wishes fulfilled by lighting a candle, dropping a coin in the pool and by chanting ' Om Namah Shivaya' seven times."

Day 4 - 19 June 08

Today seems to be like a long day for me. I went for shell meeting and held up there for a long time.

I meet with Allan Samuel a british citizen worked in Malaysia. He is my transferee as I handle his departure services from Malaysia. Allan and his wife are lovely couples. Overall we discuss alot of things abt the house while we view the house. It's a huge house with pool, gym room, meditation corner and husge garden. If I am still here in India, Maybe I will go for his parties. In India it's the landlords market and the demand is so much for rental. The house is like 3 lakhs and 25 thousand. Sangeeta the realtor should negotiate the price.

I have snap of his house and I will add it later.
We came back home after the over view only after 9pm and it's too tred day.

Day Three - 18 June 08

Rathika woke up early and went off as she had meeting.
Sharon and me as usual took shower and order breakfast.
Today, I had masala dosa and vada with coffee and sharon had
plain dosa and masal egg.

Took auto again. Took all my clothes for washing and sharon's maid
would help and I just have to pay her everyday. It's very expensive
to do it in the hotel itself.

I bought mango, some drinks for dinner today. Sharon went to church and I
am alone in the apartment today. I managed to update the blog and I want to finish
up all my work (outpost by today). Tomorrow I have to seat with Sharon to re do the
home search process flow. They are making some changes as some of the information
incorrect.

Day Three 17 June 08

As usual, I wake up early, Today I wake up at 6am (Bangalore time).
Sharon was with me and still sleeping. I watch movie for a while and
took shower and waitted for a to wake up. She wake up at about 7.45 and
we order some breakfast (toast, masala egg, coffee,). Breakfast was so heavy.

We took Auto again but reach to office on time. Internet was so slow and I could not
log in also.

Later at night we went to book shop. I managed to find some Autobiography of Nehru and also Glimps of world by Nehru. It was very thick book and I am not sure if I could buy them and bring them with me to Malaysia. Maybe on the last week of my stay here, I will make sure I get them. Again today we went to Garuda Mall and commercial street and MG Road. We also went to Sharon's house to collect her clothes. By the time we reach D'habitat it was too late. Rathika decided to stay with us also.

It was again another great day for me. I bought lots of clothes and all of it looks very nice.

Day Two - 16 June 08

I woke up early today. Maybe I am so used to wake up at 7am (Malaysian Timing).
I took my shower and get myself ready to go to work. I also read few newspaper like
Deccan Herald and The times of India. Hot news for the day was some politician's wife by the name of PatmaPriya (age 33) gone missing and found dead in Delhi. A guy by the name of Atul Rao was the prime suspect. Crime is everywhere now.

While reading the paper, I received call from Sharon, she mention that the guys there will arrange for a car to send me to work. After waiting for a while, I could not see the sign of any car coming and I went to the counter to check the status and found out that there were out of car. I decided to get an Auto Richa to work. I managed to catch hold of Auto. This driver by the name of Raja, took me for a ride to everywhere ...I was new to this place and unable to guide him the road. He took like abt 45 minutes. Finally, I called Sharon and she came to fetch me. I got to pay more then usual. Only then I found out from Sharon that, they will cheat. I personally did not feel like cheated but I now know most of the roads he took me. It's like day one orientation for me.

I went to Crown Office in India. It was Banglo converted to office. Looks nice but
we dont really get the feeling like you're in the office. I meet Rathika and Sharon and the were both very nice people. They make me feel so much like home and teach me lots of things about the roads, people and other things. The more I am with them, my confidence level is getting higher. At night we went shopping, they took me to Garuda Mall and also commercial street (like Petaling street). I bought lots of Patellas and tops. It's all mix and match type and I love them all.

We got back late and Sharon stay with me as she think it's not very safe to let me all alone. We were all like so attached to each other. We like each others company so much. We like old friends.

Bangalore - 15 June 08

It's my first time flying and I am all excited flying to Bangalore.
Most of my friends say not very good things about Bangalore. They said that I should be careful with my food and not to walk alone on the street. It's a good advise but knowing me, I will for sure do things which they told me not to do. That's me, the crazy Hema. I think my friends know me better on how I react when I get CRAZY.

I would want to try different type of food, I want to change myself like the real indian and I want to mingle with them and learnt the language. I want to cook their food. Of course work come first...(Just incase if Jan is reading my blog). I was not afraid of flying but I was more afraid that I might do some foolish thing inside the plane, but who cares, it's not like I am going to see passengers again.

To be on the save side, I thot I should get to know someone who can assist me until I get into the plane. After I check in, I notice that the guy behind me was all alone and he look more like Bangalorean, I approched him and his name was Rajiv and he came to Malaysia for work and he is also in the same flight as me. He seems to be like a nice guy and I asked him if I can tag along and he immediately said okay. We spoke about each other and shop at duty free and then we got into the plane. Rajiv was very gentle and help me with my hand carry as I need to put them on top of the cabin. Since we were not seated together, he asked me to look for him if at all I need help. Thank you Rajiv.

My seat was next to the window and on the right wing. A student from Sydney sat next to me. He is on his way to Mysore to visit his parents. He spoke for a while and after supper we both watch some movies and he slept. I don't really feel like sleeping.

The whole journey was okay. The landing was okay too. I was not afraid getting into plane, not at all. I think it was a good thing to travel alone because I can do what I want to do and meet lots of people.

Rajiv was all the way with me. We fill up immigration form together and then we collected the luggage bag also. Then we have to go thru the immigration to forward the form that we filled up. Rajiv was bassically with me until I found my driver and we say good bye and walk in different direction. His place is like 20 minutes away from the new Bangalore airport and mine was like about an hour journey from the airport.

On the way to the car park with the driver, I notice that my luggage was not with me only my hand carry was with me. I can't remember where I have placed it. I went back into the airport but the security stoped and told me that I cannot enter. I say no, I left my bag inside and I have to get it. He finally gave up after scolding me. Ahh...I don't care a damm if he wants to scold me, I need my bag and I will go to any extend to get them back. I found my bag and I felt so good. I walk back to the car park with a big smile on my face.

I took some pictures and the driver send me to my service apartment. I was too tired and went to bed after shower. The place really look very nice. I liked it so much and the people are so helpful.

One last thing before I end the post, I have to talk a little about the drivers. They are all crazy. God...they drive like mad on the road and the trafic is so bad during the day time. But the ride was fun. All you need to do is keep you mind free from any kind of negative thots. Try things the way they are and not the way you want it to be and you will surely be able to adapt to the lifestyle here.

Dare to be different

A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track. The train came, and you were just beside the track interchange. You could make the train change its course to the disused track and saved most of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way?

Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make.

Choice that majority make
Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. You might think the same way, I guess. Exactly, I thought the same way initially because to save most of the children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people would make, morally and emotionally. But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place? Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was.

Sacrifice the minority?
This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community, in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority are. The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track was sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear for him.

Reasons to be different
The author of this story said he would not try to change the course of the train because he believed that the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens.

If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he never thought the train could come over to that track! Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe. If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing hundreds of people to save these few kids.
